This Wednesday we begin our journey of Lent. What a joy it is to focus our energy not on our accomplishments or goals, but on repentance and the realization that we NEED God. Over the last 10 years our congregation has started the imposition of ashes (with some questions about the validity of it in a Lutheran congregation). We continue the tradition as I came, because it is a great visual reminder of how we will return to the ground and without the cross, there is basically no hope!
How many of your churches do the imposition of ashes? Any reasons not too besides not wanting to be Catholic?

Yes, we use the ashes. They show that we are DYING (think of the words used when they are imposed), not that those sporting them are fasting - for who knows if you are? But dust and headed to dust, yes, that's what the ashes confess.
But they go on in the form of the cross, in remembrance that our God became DUST for us and took our mortal nature to cross and then to glorious resurrection.
